The Shattering is our premier set-release event, a multi-day celebration of competitive play, collecting, and community. Hosted alongside each major release, The Shattering brings together Competitive and Casual tournaments, premium box breaks, and direct access to the design team.
This October, Trial by Combat takes center stage.

The Shattering: Trial by Combat is built for every type of player and collector. Whether you’re competing at the highest level, refining sealed skills, or chasing premium pulls, the weekend offers multiple ways to engage:

Choose Your Experience: Open or Discovery
At The Shattering: Trial by Combat, our main events are divided into Open and Discovery events, giving players the opportunity to choose the experience that best fits what they are looking for.
Open Events
Open events are designed for experienced and competitive players looking to test themselves at the highest level of play. These events bring together some of our strongest players, with Wonders playtesters and game designers also eligible to compete.
The primary focus is on competition, mastery of the game, and putting your skills and strategies to the test against the full Wonders community.
Discovery Events
Discovery events are designed for newer players, collectors, and anyone looking to experience Trial by Combat in a fun, welcoming environment.
The primary focus is on discovering the new set, experiencing new cards and strategies, and enjoying the game rather than high-level competition. Whether you’re learning the game, building your collection, or simply want to see what Trial by Combat has to offer, Discovery is a great place to jump in.

Dragon Box Battle Break
The Dragon Box Battle Break is one of The Shattering’s debut premium experiences, blending high-stakes collecting with competitive progression.
Buy-In & Entry
- Buy-in: $100 per spot
- Each spot includes five Collector Packs
- Players may purchase up to six spots, each from a different box
Round 1 – Collector Pack Opening
All players open their five Collector Packs.
Any player who opens one or more of the following cards immediately advances:
- OCM
- Autograph
- Stonefoil
- Dragonfoil
Once six players have hit one of these cards:
- Those six players each receive a Gold Pack
- All six advance to the Dragon Box Round
Round 2 – Dragon Pack Round
The six advancing players each choose one Dragon Pack from six of the eight available Dragon Packs.
- Each player opens their selected Dragon Pack
- The winner is determined by the highest-rarity pull, using the official rarity scale
Prizes:
- 1st Place: Wins a Dragon Box and advances to the Final Table
- 2nd Place: Receives the two remaining Dragon Packs
Final Table – Dragon Box Opening
The Dragon Box winner opens their Dragon Box.
- All cards opened are compared using the official rarity scale
- The Top 8 cards determine final standings
Cassian Ashe Alt-Art Promotion
This year, the Dragon Box Battle Break features an additional set of exclusive Cassian Ashe Alt-Art rewards.
Just for Entering
Every Dragon Box Battle Break entrant will also be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a Cassian Ashe Alt-Art Dragon Foil or OCM.
2nd-8th Place
Each player finishing 2nd through 8th will receive a Black Envelope containing a random Cassian Ashe Alt-Art Dragon Foil or OCM.
Dragon Box Battle Break Champion
The winner will receive the Cassian Ashe Alt-Art Stonefoil.
Every player who reaches the Final Table is guaranteed a Cassian Ashe Alt-Art, with the champion taking home the Stonefoil.
Final Prizes
- 1st Place: Cassian Ashe Alt-Art Stonefoil, Champion Playmat, and Champion Card
- 2nd-8th Place: Black Envelope containing a random Cassian Ashe Alt-Art Dragon Foil or OCM
- All Entrants: Entered into the raffle for a chance to win a Cassian Ashe Alt-Art Dragon Foil or OCM

On-Demand Box Breaks
On-demand box breaks are designed specifically for collectors who want fast, exciting experiences throughout the weekend.
How it works:
- Sign up for a box break
- Once 6 players have registered, the group is seated
- Packs are distributed, and the ripping begins
Winning the Break:
- The winner is the player who pulls an Autograph, OCM, or Stonefoil
- The winner immediately receives:
- The alt-art Gold Pack from the box
- One entry into an end-of-day Dragon Box Break
Players may win multiple box breaks and earn multiple Dragon Box Break entries.
At the end of the day, one Dragon Box Break winner will take home a Dragon Box.
On-Demand Sealed Events
On-demand sealed events function as mini-tournaments that can begin at any time during the weekend. These events are ideal for collectors and players looking for meaningful games without high pressure.
Event Structure:
- Events begin once 8 players have signed up
- Players compete in 3 rounds
- Each round win awards one Collector Pack
